First I need to give credit to a few folks. The inspiration for my quilt comes primarily from Quilts of a Feather. I also used some shapes for the quilting from the Doctor Who Quilt Along.
The Quilts of a Feather post gives all the dimensions for piecing the quilt and I used them for the door panels and then I measured the center of the quilt to put the outside pieces on like a border to avoid having it be wavy on the edges. I also decided to do paper piecing for the windows and the light. I used white for the interior of the light and then used yellow thread to make it look like the light was on.
All the quilting was done by tracing on wash away stabilizer and then quilting over it.
Windows
The Quilts of a Feather quilt had weeping angels in the windows and she said she wanted it to look like they were on the outside looking in and their reflection was in the window. I thought that was a fabulous idea so I chose my own classic villains to include - a Cyberman and a Dalek. I quilted them with a light gray thread to make it look like a reflection. They are both based on the Doctor Who Quilt along blocks with a few of my own changes.
Police Sign Panel
I had no idea what to do with quilting on the police sign panel until the very last minute. I even posted on facebook to try and get ideas on what to do with it. I didn't want to quilt the letters on the sign because I figured it would take forever, I'd have to break thread a million times, and I didn't think I had the FMQ skills to make it look good. In the end, I had a sudden idea to quilt the letters, but only certain letters, and spell out a secret message. I had to work with the letters available, so I decided to do " I love you" because it's for my husband and it seemed a fitting (although a bit mushy :-) ) message. (I in police, L in telephone, O in of, V in advice, E in immediately, Y in immediately, O in to, U in pull)
Door Panels
Gallifreyian
I did one panel in Gallifreyian which was another idea I got from Quilts of a Feather. It says Tweety Pi 2014 which is an inside joke with my husband.
9th Doctor
I knew I wanted a panel with a graffiti looking Bad Wolf. The 9th doctor is my favorite and I wanted each doctor represented anyway. Bad Wolf was the theme that ran through the whole season, so I went for it. It was my first time quilting letters like that, but it was easier than I thought it would be.
10th Doctor
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Whimey with a pocket watch seemed fitting to represent the 10th doctor. The pocket watch is based off a block from the Doctor Who Quilt Along. For all the cursive writing on the quilt, I chose a font in Word that I liked and printed out the phrases and then traced them on to wash away stabilizer. Then I used that as a template for the quilting.
11th Doctor
The 11th doctor is my husband's favorite, so I have two panels for him. The first are the 11th doctor's favorite things - a fez and a bow tie - with the words Fezzes Bow Ties are cool.
The second is the crack in time and the 11th doctor's favorite phrase "Geronimo".
Easter Eggs
So I came up with a ton of stuff that just wouldn't fit on the door panels so I decided to quilt them in black on the outer border. They're pretty hard to see from the front, but you can see it fairly easily on the back. The phrases I scattered through the quilt border are:
Don't blink, don't even blink
Fish Fingers and Custard
Don't. Touch. The baby.
Allons-y
Raggedy Man
Hello Sweetie
Fantastic
Are you my mummy?
Spoilers
It's really hard to see, but this says "Spoilers". I may try to get some better photos in the future...
So I think that's about it. Hopefully I haven't bored you or overwhelmed you with photos. For the back, I did a 60 degree triangle quilt top with hexiamonds (in case anyone is a math geek and knows what those are) :-)
Wow turned out great! Love all the details you put into it! You should post of a photo of the back it would be neat to see all the quilting show up differently.
